The present volume, the second in the Scriptores iuris Romani series and the first dedicated to the works of Iulius Paulus, contains only some of the results of a wider research, currently conducted on the books ad edictum of the great Severian jurist; a research which, it is worth pointing out, was undertaken some time ago and is still far from being completed. The research work on Paulus' ad edictum libri, which began some twelve years ago, has led to the publication of some contributions over time, which can, in some respects, and above all, for some choices of a palingenetic and commentary nature, be considered "prodromal" with respect to the writing of this volume. The decision to publish the first three books of the Pauline commentary, a work, as is well known, articulated in seventy-eight books, to which must also be added the two dedicated to the edict of the curuli builders, in addition to being imposed by the amount of work and the consequent need to proceed "by blocks", finds a further justification in the "organic", and in some way, better "isolable", character of the treatment contained in them, dedicated, in the first place, to illustrate the edict of jurisdiction of the municipal magistrates and the magistrate, up to the edict of retaliation (E. I-II), to which is added, to complete the third book, that concerning the titles of edendo (E. III) and de pactis et conventionibus (E. IV). This is the first volume, which will be followed by a second one, currently at an advanced stage of writing and including books from the fourth to the tenth.
