This volume is a synthesis of a decade of research geared to reconstructing the history and development of this important center of the II Augustean region, from the colonial phase of 291 BC to the modern city whose actual structure reveals the organization and street patterns of the Roman plan. One novelty is offered by the subdivision of the volume into two parts; this allows such a generous space to be dedicated to the late antique and medieval phases as to permit one to reach a complete reconstruction of the city's urban plan. As a result, this volume sets a model to complement an editorial line that foresees a formal continuum of a city from antiquity to the moment in which the urban plan is utilized.
